George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a prolific Scottish author and poet. His works of fantasy and mystical theology were a major inspiration to J R R Tolkien, C S Lewis and Charles Williams – The ‘Inklings’– and he was a close friend of Lewis Carroll who also acknowledged his influence.
